"MANUSMĀRTI: The Complete Manual of Human Rights in Tamil," by தி. வ. க. ற. ௧, Translated and annotated by Dr Vamadeva Shastri, is one of the greatest works on human rights in the history of India and South Asia. As such, this 9th–11th century ‘manusmriti’ has been translated into many Indian languages including Hindi and Marathi, but there is still no English translation available for wider distribution and study in English-speaking countries.. Where is the need for English translations of "manusmriti"? The answer is simple. We are fast approaching the era of globalisation. When ancient jurisprudence which has been handed down for millenniums are being replaced by new ideas, it's important that people know what is replacing at least the basic foundations of law(satya) and social order(dharma). One of the most relevant examples in this regard is "manusmriti", which depicts intimately our culture and heritage. Whereas modern systems have weakened our cultural identity, "manusmriti" provides a solid foundation upon which cultures may be built. Mankind today needs to rediscover its roots, or it will perish. The extensive knowledge in "manusmriti" has to be made available to the wider world. ௧ந் தி. வ. க. ௧, "MANUSMĀRTI: The Complete Manual of Human Rights in Tamil," (Thiruvanathapuram: Koodal Puram Publications, 2003) MANUSMRITI TODAY is an initiative by Centre for Study of Society and Secularism (CSSS), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
